Observer student newspaper wins multiple awards, adviser honored

The 60th Annual Florida College System Publications Association (FCSPA) conference and awards banquet took place Nov. 14-16 in Tampa.

Not only did the Observer student newspaper win multiple awards, but publications adviser, Jennifer Shapiro-Sacks, was inducted into the Florida College System Activities Association for the publications division.

The awards the Observer won include:

2nd place sports column, Elliot Tritto;

2nd place in-depth reporting, Michael Gennaro;

2nd place sports writing, Michael Gennaro;

3rd place news story, Michelle Castano;

2nd place newspaper headlines; Michelle Castano

2nd place arts review, Anabel Sanchez;

Honorable mention, on-site photo contest, Thandie Brown.

Students also had the opportunity to attend multiple workshops pertaining to journalism such as interviewing tips, mobile storytelling, photography fundamentals, using digital tools for newsgathering, as well as have the newspaper critiqued.

The 61st Annual FCSPA conference will take place next November in Ybor City.
