Sara Varela, Editor-in-chief
Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Sara is a professional photographer and videographer currently majoring in Film Production at Broward College. She is an award winning writer and during the summer she participated in the POLITICO Journalism Institute, where she produced, shot and edited a 2-minutes video and a 500-words article published by POLITICO.com. She became the first community college student to be chosen for the prestigious program.
Daniel Pineiro, Copy Editor
Daniel worked as a writer and illustrator for three years at The Chariot at J.P. Taravella High after being inspired a TV show called Smallville, where characters like Clark Kent and Chloe Sullivan worked in their school’s Journalism club. After graduating from High School in 2015, he joined The Observer in 2016 where he works as Copy Editor and Illustrator. He’s considering to major in journalism at Broward College.
Weing Leung, Social Media Editor
Weing is a passionate graphic designer and multimedia specialist from Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. She is the Social Media Editor at The Observer, Graphic Designer and Social Media Manager at Student Life – South Campus, and Student Ambassador at Central Campus. Weing is able to analyze, propose and create both traditional and innovative solutions to problems related to Visual Communication.
Rehan Ally, Online Editor
Rehan is a sophomore at Broward College, majoring in communications with intentions of going into the film industry. She enjoys being a part of The Observer because of the great connections she has made with people through the meetings and the events. Rehan also enjoys photography and videography. She thanks her time at The Observer since she has greatly improved her writing skills and has a newfound love for writing.
Collin McCoy, Photography Editor
Collin has been attending Broward College for 2 years and is following a degree in Management in Informational Systems. He has been a member of The Observer for a year, where he has fulfilled his aspiration of becoming Photography Editor. His love for photography has taken him to assist several classes over the past few years. Collin also holds certifications for the programs from the Adobe Suite Dreamweaver and Illustrator.
Manicia Reneus, North Bureau Chief
Manicia is currently majoring in Journalism at Broward College. She joined The Observer in 2016 where she started as Staff Writer and soon became the North Bureau Chief. She takes photos for her articles and is now contributing for the new video section at The Observer. Additionally, she writes for the South Florida Insider, a website dedicated to entertainment and sports as well for the on-campus online magazine HerCampus.
Chris Stauffer, Central Bureau Chief
Chris has been at Broward College since 2015 as an early admission student from South Broward High School. He recently earned his AA degree and is now pursuing his Bachelor degree in Environmental Science. He enjoys working at The Observer, where he has made friends and has written several articles over the past year.
