On March 14, students gathered on Central Campus to interact with AI and learn about how AI is used in careers, the effects of it, how to use it responsibly in school, work and in general.

The AI expo was an immersive experience, which allowed students to see how AI is transforming the future, how to get involved, learn about AI and discuss it with other students. According to Michelle Levine, the Associate Vice President for Teaching Excellence and Learning, “this event focuses on the impact of AI in the future of work, so I want students to think about what their role is going to be as AI starts becoming more integrated into our society and what human skills AI has and how they can leverage those skills to use AI more. Also, as students learn about how AI affects different careers, I hope it motivates them to find out their career path.”

During the AI expo, many topics were explored, including how AI can be utilized in positive and negative ways in cybersecurity. “Today I am talking about cybersecurity to mostly young adults who may not understand the consequences, and both sides of AI where it helps in productivity, but I’ve also got to warn people that there are people on the other side of the world who are using it in a not so nice place and it could be very disturbing if you are not very careful,” said Glenn Benjamin,  IT support community account director at LAN Infotech. Many other topics were also discussed including AI in medical simulation training, adventures in engineering with artificial intelligence and how AI can create opportunity instead of disruption in career fields.

Students who studied many different majors came to the event and were excited to learn how AI is going to positively impact the future. Brandon Clarke, a student at Broward College said, “AI is the future, it is a tool that can be used in the future. For example, I’m in technology software development and even something as simple as copilot AI is just very ingrained into the work process.”

Students were also interested in gaining knowledge on how AI can be an innovative tool. “I was able to learn a little more insight on how it works and why we use it, also why they are pushing for businesses to use it,” said Elica Half, a student studying in the Bachelor of Applied Science Technology Management program at Broward College.

There were a multitude of subjects that students enjoyed exploring. “What I liked about this event was that it helped explore different opportunities that are presented in Artificial Intelligence and kind of gives you some basic knowledge on AI,” said Alex Encarnacion, who is majoring in cybersecurity at BC. Students also liked being able to acquire new knowledge on how AI provides resources, how it can be applied in many situations and how it can be used in careers.
