Continuing your education at a post-secondary institution may introduce concepts that are difficult to grasp alone. Professors typically have about 25 students in a classroom, which makes providing individual attention for struggling students difficult.

Broward College has established the Academic Success Center as a free service for students who seek one-on-one tutoring to assist them in their pursuit of higher education.

The Academic Success Center at South Campus is run by Assistant Dean Karen M. Magnus, whose “career in higher education began at Broward College as a part-time employee while attending school,” she recalled. Magnus stated that her role is to “work with key stakeholders to identify students’ academic needs, uncover strategies that complement student learning, and work with a talented team of professionals to provide students with quality support services to help them succeed.”

Her commitment to the students of Broward College does not go unnoticed, as throughout the South Campus hundreds of students take advantage of the Academic Success Center every semester.

In turn, they are more likely to pass their classes and develop better study habits. This cements a powerful statement from Magnus, that “when students receive the necessary support and resources to succeed academically, they are more likely to perform well in their courses which also leads to higher retention and graduation rates.” Further proving Magnus’ point that the Academic Success Center “plays a vital role in the success of the college by providing quality academic support services to students.”

Karli Martinez, a Spanish, ASL, and economics tutor for the Academic Success Center at the Central Campus said she became a tutor because “many of [her] family members are teachers, including her mother.” “It is also rewarding to feel that you are making a difference and helping people do well academically,” Martinez mentioned.

As an experienced tutor, she thoughtfully seeks to explain why more students don’t take advantage of the free tutoring service.

“Many students at Broward College also have jobs or families, so it is difficult for them to find time to go to the ASC,” she said.

Some may be apprehensive to ask for help or may not feel motivated to go. Some students also may not know about the Academic Success Center, leaving it to these tutors to visit classes, introduce themselves, and inform students that tutoring is available.

The ASC helps make earning a degree more accessible to everyone who puts forth the effort to push a little further and try a little harder. When someone offers to come alongside you and assist you in reaching your goal, you should take full advantage of this opportunity.

The ASC is located at the Central Campus in building 17 on the second floor. On the North Campus in building 62 on the first floor and on the South Campus, it is in building 72 on the second floor.
